Van Buren Street warehouse tapped for office expansion

The 1945 industrial building at 1220 W. Van Buren Street will grow by two stories.

Say hello to “The Oxxford”

Yet another historic West Loop warehouse building—in this case the former home of the Oxxford Clothing Company at 1220 W. Van Buren Street—is getting a makeover into new offices. Under the plan, the seven-story, 115,000-square-foot structure would be renovated and expanded to nine stories and roughly 140,000 square feet. The old 1945 building would be rebranded The Oxxford in reference to its longtime industrial tenant.

The adaptive reuse project comes from Des Plaines-based developer the Missner Group and Chicago-based design firm Wright Heerema Architects. Missner acquired the old warehouse for $11 million in 2016, reported Crain’s at the time. In addition to providing upcoming tenants with new loft style office space with original brick and concrete details, the Oxxford will include amenities such as a lounge, fitness center, and roof deck with a green wall and skyline views.

Construction on the Oxxford began in November and is expected to be completed in mid-2019, according to RE Journals. It will join a number of Van Buren Street residential projects spurred on by the greater West Loop development boom as well as the area’s convenience to the CTA’s Racine Blue Line stop.

Notable nearby developments include the 300-unit Landmark West Loop high-rise and a pair of upcoming transit-oriented rental towers at 1125 and 1050 W. Van Buren Street— expected to deliver a combined 401 apartments.
