Unique Art Deco one-bedroom in Old Town seeks $295K

The home is one of six units in the former artists’ colony

Shoppers tired of the same cookie-cutter condos will find much to like in this cozy one-bedroom located in the historic Theophil Studios in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood. The 750-square-foot residence is full of streamlined art deco/art moderne architectural details.

Similar the landmark Carl Street Studios nearby, the structure at 143 W. Burton Place was built in the 19th century before receiving a modernist makeover decades later. In the case of the Theophil Studios’ 1940 revamp, architect Frank Lapasso added a stucco facade, red trim, and distinctive porthole windows.

The condo—one of just six units in the building—features curved walls, parquet flooring, terra-cotta baseboards, and two large leaded art glass windows in the living room. The single bedroom includes built-in dressers and one of the portholes mentioned above. The kitchen and bathroom both boast black and white checkerboard floors.

“This is super unique property,” listing agent Owen Duffy of Fulton Grace Realty told Curbed. “It’s totally atypical of the type of unit commonly found in Chicago and offers an opportunity to get into the area with a relatively low ($250) monthly assessment.

Ideal for a buyer looking to downsize from a larger home or set up a pied-à-terre, the Theophil Studios one-bedroom is currently listed for $295,000. It last sold in 2002 for $214,000, according to public records.
