The Chef at Trump Tower Chicago’s Restaurant Resigns

Nick Dostal leaves five months after Sixteen went more casual as Terrace 16

Count Terrace 16 executive chef Nick Dostal as another worker who has resigned under Donald Trump. Dostal will soon leave his post inside Trump International Tower & Hotel Chicago for new career opportunities, according to a news release.

In January 2017 he took over as executive chef at Sixteen, a fine dining restaurant with two Michelin stars inside the tower. This year, management replaced Sixteen with Terrace 16, a more casual restaurant that opened in June in River North. Dostal stuck around for five months after the casual conversion.

The Tribune reported that Dostal has a new job lined up and will stay in Chicago — but he’s not ready to make an announcement. As chef at Sixteen, Dostal reestablished the restaurant with Michelin inspectors last year as it earned two stars. He took over for chef Thomas Lents, and the restaurant wasn’t starred by Michelin in the year following Lents’ departure. But business slowed after November 2016 — partly as a consequence of how many Chicagoans felt about Trump — and management hoped to inject some energy into the space by opening a new restaurant. While Terrace 16 failed to grab Michelin’s attention, Dostal and management were proud of their efforts. However, Reader critic Mike Sula wasn’t impressed and wrote a controversial review that ripped the president’s politics. He wasn’t too happy with the food, either.

Dostal’s last day at Terrace 16 is November 26. Sixteen opened in 2008. The tower is owned by the Trump Organization, the real estate company owned by the president.
