Inside the Gold Coast’s historic Thompson House, listed for $21.9M

The famous 19th century home is Chicago’s second priciest listing

The Thompson House, an iconic Richardsonian Romanesque mansion in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood, bundles old world craftsmanship and modern conveniences at an eye-watering asking price of $21.9 million.

Built in 1888 by architects Cobb & Frost for wealthy attorney John Howland Thompson, the nationally registered historic landmark stands at the northeast corner of Dearborn Street and Delaware Place, across from Washington Square Park and the recently revamped Newberry Library—also designed by Cobb.

Although the home hit the market as a private “pocket listing” back in May, its recent addition to the public multiple listing service provides a first glimpse inside the artfully constructed and carefully restored mansion.

The interior of the residence is awash in ornate millwork including carved wood columns, panelling, archways, staircases, and coffered ceilings. Other old-school touches include silk wall-coverings, marble floors, carved fireplaces, art glass windows, and a stunning custom stained glass dome.

The Thompson House also sports a number of modern conveniences such as an upgraded kitchen, heated floor, integrated sound system, new HVAC, elevator, and a professional grade spa with a sauna and hot tub. Combined with its accompanying coachhouse, the historic property spans 13,400 square feet and includes six bedrooms and six and a half bathrooms.

Represented by Coldwell Banker agent Tatiana Miller, the home is currently Chicago’s second most expensive listing with an asking price of $21.9 million. It is eclipsed only by Lincoln Park’s Parrillo mansion—a palatial Burling Street property that hit the market in late 2016 for a record-shattering $50 million.
