The home’s notable architect studied under Frank Lloyd Wright

In suburban Barrington, Illinois, this striking midcentury ranch was built in 1963 by notable architect Dennis Blair. The designer, who studied at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin school and worked under Wright on the Guggenheim Museum, created dozens of unusual Chicago-area homes.

Located on a sloping 1.3-acre wooded lot, this three-bedroom, two-bathroom example features a low-slung brick and wood exterior with a covered side entryway. Step inside and there are vaulted cathedral ceilings, a pair of fireplaces, walls of glass, and a renovated master suite facing a central courtyard. The home also includes a finished lower-level rec room, a skylit kitchen, and a heated studio and workshop space off the garage.

Agent Beth Gollehon of Century 21 Affiliated recently listed the modernist ranch with an asking price of $495,000. The north suburban property last sold in 2010 for $475,000, records show.

A pathway covered by a freestanding canopy leads to the home’s entryway.
Several of the rooms feature vaulted ceilings and sliding glass walls.
The bright, skylit kitchen has a large island, a dedicated dining area, and white cabinets.
The updated master bathroom has a wood double vanity and a walk-in shower lined with blue tile.
