Contemporary townhouse near the 606 asks $800K

Built in 2015, the North Side home was extensively customized by its realtor owners

There’s plenty to like about this handsomely upgraded three-level townhouse situated just steps from the 606 trail in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood. One of 24 units that makeup 2015’s The Row development, the Winnebago Avenue residence is full of design touches that reflect the personality of its real estate agent owners, Lauren Mitrick Wood and husband Charlie Wood.

The couple went to work early to customize the space before it was even completed. “We bought it pre-construction which enabled us to opt out of a lot of developer’s choices and put in our own stuff,” explained Charlie. “We were able to make all of the decisions about flooring, paint colors, hardware, lighting, and more. From the kitchen cabinet pulls and subway tiles, to bathroom fixtures to the living room bar, so much of it is unique to us.”


The couple drew design inspiration from the many properties they’ve encountered professionally as well as a Slim Aaron photograph depicting a 1960s Palm Springs pool party that hangs in the home’s living room. Combined with designer decor touches from Jonathan Adler, RH, and West Elm, the result is what Lauren describes as a “mix between industrial modern and California cool.”

Other notable upgrades include motorized sun shades, built-in storage in the master bedroom, a floating living room media console, and various improvements to the home’s rooftop deck.

Though most features will appeal to just about every taste, the owners did go a little bold on some of the color choices: lining one of the bathrooms in palm-leaf wallpaper and painting the entire third bedroom/den space a dramatic shade of blue.

“Professionally, really loud colors are a bit of a realtor ‘no-no’ because we’re always telling our own clients to stay neutral,” laughed Lauren. “But so far people have responded really well and a new owner can always change it if he or she wants.”

The recently-listed Bucktown townhouse is currently seeking $800,000 plus $100 per month in HOA fees. The property includes a small front yard on Winnebago and garage parking for two cars.
