Apartments pitched for vacant Edgewater lot

In Edgewater, Chicago-based developer Quest Realty Group is looking to build a six-story, 59-unit apartment complex at a long-vacant site along Sheridan Road. Dubbed “Loft Lago,” the project would rise at 5950 N. Sheridan, just north of the Colvin House—a historic 1901 George Maher-designed mansion turned coworking space in 2017.

As proposed, the new building calls for a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units and is close to what existing zoning allows. The project is requesting a slight variance for six feet of additional height, according to a recent Crain’s report.

Although the site is steps from the Thorndale Red Line stop, the plan would provide indoor and outdoor parking for 61 vehicles. The boxy, gray-brick design comes courtesy of Hanna Architects and includes a rooftop deck with views of Lake Michigan.

Alderman Harry Osterman will hold a public meeting to discuss the proposal on Wednesday, June 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Emanuel Congregation Synagogue across the street at 5959 N. Sheridan Road. Quest told Crain’s that it aims to complete the project in 2021.

Over the last few years, the Edgewater neighborhood welcomed relatively few new multifamily rental developments. Two upcoming projects, located at 6149 N. Broadway and the corner of Sheridan and Broadway, are focused on delivering smaller-sized units catering mostly to younger renters.
